The Flashbulb – Black Lawn Finale

31 03 2010

I know I’ve written about The Flashbulb (Benn Jordan) before, and posted some of his stuff. It’s great. He did a show at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in the fall, it was pretty sweet. He’s a trained jazz guitarist, based out of Chicago. This song has had me captivated recently. Like some of his others that I like, it has a sweet simple melodic component, layered with out of your mind beats. But the whole thing is very composed, orchestrated. I loved how the percussive blips and beats are actually contoured so that they grow; they are are aggregated at different levels. Each individual beat is super fast, but they group together into units of different size. And I love the sort of baby squeal whistle type sound, I don’t know what it is but it gives it all a such an edge. Love it!

Bloody Beetroots

29 03 2010

The Bloody Beetroots are an italian electronic music duo. They have remixed a lots of songs, and they are always really intense, usually with a strong, aggressive low synth. The remix of She’s a Maniac is fun, really upbeat, and energetic. It kind of feels like your heart is hyperpalpitating. Others I’d recommend are WARP 1.9, Jolie Fille (The Bloody Beetroots Remix), I Am Not Drunk (Bloody Beetroots Rmx). It’s hard to listen to them for too long, but if you want music to scream at the moon with, this might work.

Abigail Stauffer

23 03 2010

A video made by local Ann Arbor musician Abigail Stauffer, part of an effort to get to perform with Ingrid Michaelson. Abbie’s good at the singer-songwriter style, I’ve seen her play around town a couple times. It seems she’s starting to get a following too! I know she opened not long ago for the Ragbirds too. Check it!

FAST FORWARD to TWENTY-TEN: dancefloor of the future

22 03 2010

The gig for this years New Years  Eve was hands down, one of the best times I have played music for people…  period. There was so much energy and all of my favorite folks were on the floor making magic like they do in the Michigan.

I could post some of the music from that night like other blogs do, but I think it would be easier to calculate the vibe if I left a mix up for download that has the same spirit, the same energy, the same rhythm and flow that so easily captivated the mess of bodies on the floor at the Heidelberg some nights ago.

So there are  few spots that I missed but overall it’s a quality taste of what we have been shaking our bootys to lately.

So here is that thing and I hope you all enjoy what I played.

Thanx to Joseph, Alex, Brendan, Robin, Amanda and anyone else that moved to those beats on that night.

italo-smut, freshwave, and disco neuveau mixed with a little indie-funk danse macabre.

get some.

It’s so satisfying to know that after all these     years, synth-pop pioneers Depeche Mode, are not only still making music that surprises and inspires (okay, so a little biased, but I’ve been in love since Violator, what do you expect?.) but also continues to push the envelope with their consistent production of quality remixes. Like I said before, Violator got me started and I wanted to share a few of the remixes I have been getting into lately.

Depeche Mode – Sometimes I Wish Were Dead (Flexi Mix)

Depeche Mode – World in My Eyes (Cicada Edit)

Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again ( Digitalism Remix)

Depeche Mode – Wrong (Thin White Duke remix)

Mux Mool – Skulltaste

Brooklyn beat maker Mux Mool will be releasing his first LP Skulltaste, for Ann Arbor’s Ghostly soon. Having material on Moodgadget and the collaboration between Ghostly and Adult Swim entitled Ghostly Swim, this new material ends up somewhere between eclectic leftfield hip-hop, trashcan beats with weird beepbleeps and (this one is for you Joseph) full-on dance via Enceledus. Thanx to the folks at RCRD LBL, for a short time you can stream his beautiful debut in its entirety below, MMMmmm… delicious beats. I can’t wait for the proper release.

Pretty Lights

18 03 2010

I love this band. I don’t know how to describe it exactly, or what it is like. It’s not that experimental, but I’m at a loss for words. help! Maybe a mix of Radiohead, the Avalanches, Massive Attack, Stereolab and Lo-fidelity All-stars. But that’s such a crazy chaotic list. Please just check it out. I mean, it’s kind of electro-rockpop. But that makes it sound too trite.

I stumbled across them while playing around on hype machine. Gloriously, they post their albums for free download at I’ve been listening to the album Making Up A Changing Mind and am totally digging it. I really think all the tracks are good, but maybe start with Future Blind and I Can See It In Your Face.

I recommend turning up the bass, at least for the last minute of I Can See It In Your Face.

Oh man, I can’t get enough of this album!!!
