Daft Punk – Remix After All

28 06 2010

Daft Punk’s phenomenal album, Homework was one of the seminal techno albums that really pushed me into all things electronic back in the day. Every single track is a burner. I have so many memories when we used to rock out to these jams

They since have slowly developed their sound and morphed into a live force to be reckoned with whether DJing or putting together a full Live PA show for big festivals. I have a few remixes for all you mixheads out there to check out.

DEMF (aka Movement 2010): Detroit Electronic Music Festival

7 06 2010

Last weekend (Memorial Day Weekend), two of us bloggers here went to all three days of DEMF, and had a blast. It was crazy sweet, seeing some sick acts from classic techno to dubstep and downtempo. A couple highlights:

First and foremost, Pretty Lights brought down the house. Monday evening in general was just out of control amazing on the Red Bull stage, but my favorite by far was Pretty Lights. They did a live set with a guy mixing and a live drummer. They put together music at a little slower of bpm, but with huge downbeats, sweet samples, and great rises and falls. Within seconds of arriving on stage, the place was packed to the gills, superhot, and heaving. Arms went in the air, rocking the beat. This group does a sensational live show. Do not miss. One song they played was:

Pretty Lights – Total Fascination

Another favorite was A-trak, who played a dj set on Saturday. He’s got a real hip-hop vibe, and actually toured with Kanye West as his dj. The whole show had some sweet energy, and he was clearly having a blast doing it. The best piece of the show was a remix of Daft Punk’s Robot Rock, with an inserted sample saying “Barbra Streisand”. I wish I could that recording. And my favorite track by him (and how I heard of him in the first place) was his remix of Heads Will Roll by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It is awesome. Unfortunately I only heard from over by the porta-potties.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (A-trak remix)

Great shows!!!

My 5 star list (from iTunes)

8 12 2009

Below is a list of the songs in my current iTunes library that I have given 5 stars. The star system isn’t the best indication of being my favorites, but it works well enough. It basically means I liked it enough to bother making the note. I might feel a little differently about some of them now, but in general there are some great songs in there. I’ll probably talk about a few of those in more detail in days to come.

Daft Punk – Aerodynamic

6 12 2009

This song is awesome, one of my favorites by daft punk. Here are three different versions, the original and two interpretations. One remix is by The Twelves, probably the most amazing remix duo I have come across. They do some amazing stuff; a particular favorite of mine is a remix of an MIA song. I can post if there’s interest, it’s from the 30 minutes of Twelves track. The other version is a classical style version, with awesome orchestral instrumentation. The strings really make it come alive, and then the arpeggios in the piano have a feel of Philip Glass, and then the percussion (snare and timpani I think) give it some energy! I’m really impressed at this cross genre reinterpretation. I like to talk about how modern artists reinterpret classical themes, but this is a great example of how classical instrumentation can flesh out and enrich an already awesome electronic song. The sum is greater than the parts!
